ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Highlights
USA’s first-ever win
The USA achieved this feature against Canada thanks to Aaron Jones and Andries Gous on June 1. Aaron Jones had been awarded the “Man of the Match” prize for his unbeaten 94 runs in 40 balls. Jones hit 10 sixes in that match. Andries Gous (65 off 46 balls) was the second fiddle in that partnership with Jones.
Namibia’s Super Over Win
The match between Namibia and Oman ended tied. Oman scored 109 runs batting first. Namibia levelled the score in their stipulated overs. Namibia set a target of 22 runs for Oman in the Super Over. David Wiese bowled the super over for Namibia and was the star performer. Player of the Match: David Wiese
Sri Lanka’s lowest score
South Africa wiped Sri Lanka out for just 77 runs. It marked the lowest-ever total by an Asian nation in T20I history. Anrich Nortje was exceptional with the ball and bagged 4-fers. South Africa successfully chased down the target. Player of the Match: Anrich Nortje.
Pakistan surrender to the USA
The second Super Over of the 2024 T20 World Cup occurred because Haris Rauf conceded 14 runs in the twentieth over. Mohammad Amir bowled poorly resulting in conceding 18 runs in the Super Over. It was beyond Pakistan’s ark and lost the match in Super Over against the USA. Player of the Match: Monank Patel for his half-century.

Uganda makes history!
Uganda, who entered in the tournament as one of the Africa qualifers teams won their first-ever match in T20 World Cup. They achieved this feature in their second match in T20 World Cup. Uganda successfully chased the target of 78 set by the Papua New Guinea (PNG). Uganda emerged victorious by 3 wickets. PoTM: Riazat Ali Shah.
Bangladesh stun Sri Lanka!
Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy formed a 63-run partnership, contributing to Bangladesh’s victory over Sri Lanka. Rishad Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman bagged three wickets each for Bangladesh. Taskin Ahmed got two wickets. Player of the Match: Rishad Hossain.
Pakistan’s downfall continues against India
Pakistan’s record against India in the ICC events remains a concern for the PCB. While chasing a target of 120 runs, Pakistan played conservatively until 13 overs. Pakistan was the favourite, with seven wickets in hand and a run-up ball required in the final six overs. Then comes Bumrah’s special break-through. Rizwan got out after attempting a slog sweep against Bumrah.
Pakistan failed to hit a boundary between 14 and 19 overs. It resulted in 18 runs being required from the final over. Naseem Shah hit two consecutive boundaries against Arshdeep but it was not enough. Pakistan suffered a difficult loss in the game, which was difficult for fans to comprehend. Australia’s Performance on Big Stage
Australia’s temperament and ability to compete on the Big Stage against a well-established team is a learning opportunity for others. Head and Warner’s powerplay was key in Australia’s innings resulting in Australia outplaying England. Cummins and Zampa’s bowling changed the game, causing England to lose wickets in crucial moments. Uganda created a record in the T20 World Cup which they shouldn’t be proud of. Uganda now has the lowest all-out total in T20 World Cup history. They shared this feature with the Netherlands, who also bowled out for 39 runs against Sri Lanka. PoTM: Akeal Hosein.
South Africa and their potential to handle pressure in ICC events
South Africa is not known for handling pressure in the Knock-out stages of ICC events. However, it was league stages and South Africa secured a narrow four-run victory over Bangladesh. The turning point of the match was Rabada removing Hridoy in the 18th over. Rabada ended the 18th over conceding only 2 runs. Makram trusted Maharaja to bowl the penultimate over. Maharaja didn’t disappoint him. Heinrich Klaasen (46 runs) was awarded the Player of the Match for his sensible innings.
Australia finished the match in 5.4 overs
Australia’s dominant performance against Namibia helped them to through to Super 8 of the T20 World Cup. Namibia had no idea how skilled Australia’s bowlers were. Hazlewood, Stoinis, Zampa smashed Namibia. Warner and Head gave the finishing touch. Australia bowled Namibia out for 72 and won by 9 wickets. Player of the Match: Adam Zampa 4/12 (4).
New Zealand’s disappointing exit
We have witnessed a couple of setbacks in the T20 World Cup 2024. New Zealand lost their first match against Afghanistan and second match against West Indies. New Zealand bowlers started very well, picking up wickets at regular intervals. West Indies changed the game in the last two overs courtesy of Sherfane Rutherford. Rutherford remains unbeaten at 68 off 38 balls. Alzarri Joseph (4/19) and Gudakesh Motie (3/25) shake the New Zealand’s batting line up.
England finishes off in 3.2 overs against Oman
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood dismantled Oman’s top order. Adil Rashid grabbed four wickets. England’s response was explosive. Buttler and Bairstow completed the task in 3.1 overs.
Nepal almost stun South Africa!
Nepal started the chase with 36 runs opening partnership. Sheikh and Sah added 50 runs off 36 balls. Nepal needed 21 off the last four overs, but Shamsi’s two-wicket burst in the 18th over turned the match. Sompal Kami’s 105m hit changed the equations, leaving Nepal 8 off 6 balls. South Africa faced pressure as Nepal needed two runs in the last two balls. But Nepal failed to make a huge upset in the T20 World Cup.
New Zealand secured a dominating victory!
New Zealand secured a victory in the tournament thanks to a professional performance the from bowlers of New Zealand. They lost both of their games against Afghanistan and the West Indies. Uganda’s disappointing performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup ended.
